Limonene

When life gives you lemons, you get Limonene! Just by the name, you can assume it’s associated with a lemon or citrus flavor. As stated in our previous post, Terpenes are aromatic molecules produced from the resin of plants. Along with flavonoids, terpenes are the scents/smells that we associate with plants.

Terpenes have been shown to have medicinal or even psychoactive effects.

In fact, terpenes are the primary constituent of essential oils and are used in the practice of aromatherapy. Studies have shown that terpenes and cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, work synergistically and amplify each other’s psychoactive and medicinal properties. This is known as the entourage effect.

What is Limonene?

Limonene is a liquid terpene that has widespread uses. It is most commonly found in the peels of citrus fruits, including lemons, limes, and oranges. It is also found in a wide range of cannabis cultivars. It can be used to flavor foods or medicines. It is also used in fragrances and as a powerful solvent in cleaning products.

But enough of that… we want to know its benefits already!

Research supports that limonene can boost the immune system and may help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It also has been shown that it has powerful antioxidant properties and may reduce the incidence and aid in the treatment of some cancers.

Limonene’s benefits also include pain and heartburn relief, improvement in skin repair, and the healing of wounds, along with reducing inflammation in the gut. It also contains antifungal and antibacterial properties, indicating that can aid in recovering from a cold or the flu.

What Cannabis Strains contain Limonene?

Being one of the most common terpenes found in cannabis, there are various strains that contain limonene. Cannabis strains high in limonene are known for an uplifting, euphoric high that can help elevate a person’s mood and increase their focusing abilities.

Strains that have a name or aroma associated with citrus are likely to contain high amounts of limonene. Most of these are sativa strains, which include Lemon Skunk, Tangie, Super Lemon Haze for example. Other strains that include limonene are Jack Herer, OG Kush, and Sour Diesel, despite that they lack a name associated with citrus.

What other Products contain Limonene?

There are also CBD isolate products that include terpenes, but no THC. If you are someone who likes to dab their dose of CBD, for example, some companies make CBD isolates with added terpenes, known as terpsolate. You can get the benefits of CBD and terpenes without the high!
