What causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?Pressure on the median nerve causes carpal tunnel syndrome. This pressure can come from swelling or anything that makes the carpal tunnel smaller. There are many things that can cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome including constant hand movements over and over like using the computer mouse.
SymptomsThe common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are tingling or numbness and weakness. For me, I felt the tingling and some numbness in my fingers. This feeling along with weakness prevented me from lifting heavy options. Some days were better than others.
How to Prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? While there is no way to 100% prevent carpal tunnel, you can minimize the stress on your hand and wrist by:
- Take frequent breaks. If you use equipment that vibrates take a break.
- Change your computer mouse. I love Logitech’s trackball.
- Keep hands warm. During winter keep your hand as warm as possible to prevent pain and stiffness.
- Improve your posture. Sitting badly at your desk can lead to not only strain on your back but also your wrist.
